The KMCH College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore was established in the year 1995 by the Kovai Medical Center Research and Educational Trust. It has been recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), New Delhi and Affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.

D Pharmacy

Overview

D. Pharmacy is a two year regular full-time diploma Program designed to prepare candidates to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in hospitals, community pharmacies and other pharmaceutical related fields.

The course of academic training is of 2 years duration with minimum of 180 working days per year followed by a practical training not less than 500 hours covered in around 3 months in Government Hospital / Dispensary / pharmacy recognized by PCI-New Delhi

Duration : 2 years + 3 months training

Commencement : July

Intake : 60 Seats

Eligibility : Physics/Chemistry/Biology (or) Mathemetics (or) Botany/Zoology

 

Eligibilty for Admission

A Pass in HSc or equivalent with the following group of subjects

Career Prospects

Apart from choosing higher education Programs like B.Pharm, qualified students may start practicing as pharmacists in India.

B. Pharm

Overview

B. Pharmacy is one of the popular job oriented undergraduate degree Program among the science students after HSc. It is a four year program to be completed in eight semesters (each semester is of 6 months).

This program is about the manufacture, quality control, research and development of drugs. The program is highly career oriented and opens up excellent opportunities in Pharma industry.

Eligibility : Physics/Chemistry/Biology (or) Mathemetics (or) Botany/Zoology
 
Eligibilty for Admission
All categories of candidate except SC/ST community should have minimum of 40% aggregate marks in HSc with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics, or Physics, Chemistry & Biology or Physics, Chemistry, Botany & Zoology). Diploma in Pharmacy holders (from a PCI recognized institute) is eligible to pursue this course under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act. The curricula and syllabi for the program shall be prescribed by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi and The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai.
Each semester shall consist of not less than 100 working days. The odd semesters shall be conducted from the month of June/July to November/December and the even semesters shall be conducted from December/January to May/June in every calendar year. Candidate is required to put in at least 80% attendance in individual courses considering theory and practical separately. The candidate shall complete the prescribed course satisfactorily to be eligible to appear for the respective examinations.


Pharm  D

Overview

Pharm.D Program is a six-year professional program leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree combines basic science education and application of advanced Clinical Pharmacy skills with contextual research so that the graduates will be prepared to contribute to innovations to improve patient quality of life through new discoveries. The program emphasizes problem-based approach to disease management.

Pharm D comprises of five years of classroom/hospital-based didactic study and a research project followed by internship in the sixth year. Core subjects include Pharmacotherapeutics, Clinical Pharmacy, hospital and Community Pharmacy, Clinical Toxicology, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Clinical Research, Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Biostatistics and Research Methodology and Clerkship. During the internship, candidates are imparted advanced lessons in clinical pharmacy services or pharmacy practice under the supervision of faculty members and clinical preceptors.

Overview

Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy that holds with procedure of converting a new chemical entity into a safe and effective formulation. Pharmaceutics is the science of dosage form deals with the formulation of a pure drug substance into a dosage form. Pharmaceutics involves the tracks like drug delivery technologies, novel drug delivery systems, routes of drug administration, pharmaceutical nanotechnology, Nano pharmaceutics and advanced drug delivery, bio therapeutics as novel technique in drug delivery, drug delivery device development and major challenges in drug delivery.

 

M. Pharm in Pharmacy Practice

Overview

The department of pharmaceutics was established in the year 2005. The two year degree program of Master of Pharmacy in pharmaceutics, is structured in the way to provide basic to sophisticated technical knowledge to take over the research career in academic and in Pharma industry.

About Department

Pharmacognosy is an applied science that involves the study of physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs including the search for new drugs and its standardization. It is a vital link between Ayurvedic and Allopathic system of medicine and one of the core subjects in the entire pharmacy curriculum like, D.Pharm, B.Pharm and Pharm D program.

The Department of Pharmacognosy is actively imparting the profound knowledge of Pharmacognosy and herbal drug technologies to the students of KMCH College of Pharmacy.

A separate museum with more than 200 specimens of crude drugs, herbal charts, herbarium collections and marketed herbal formulations including Siddha and Ayurvedic formulations are maintained to impart traditional knowledge to the students. Further to make aware of the students to common traditional herbs, a separate medicinal plant garden is maintained with around 200 medicinal plants with name board displaying botanical name, active constituents and uses. Students are involved and encouraged to maintain the garden to make them familiar with the medicinal herbs.

Department of pharmaceutical analysis was established in the year 2004.

About Department

The department of pharmacy practice was established in the year 2003 to provide better patient health care and to bestow community pharmacy services. Pharmacy practice is a patient oriented specialization that includes hospital, clinical pharmacy services. The curriculum of pharmacy practice blends theory and practice of medical and biological sciences thus leading to a rewarding career in today’s expanding health care system.

The Drug and Poison information Center is a division of the Department of Pharmacy Practice (Attached to KMCH College of Pharmacy) and is housed at Kovai Medical Center Hospital, Coimbatore. Pharmacology Laboratories

Effects of various drugs on animal models will be demonstrated in pharmacology laboratories using mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits.

Handling of animals and experiments on preclinical studies will be carried out majorly in Pharmacology laboratories.

 

Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry Laboratories

Facilities in Pharmacognosy laboratories are provide for the students to acquire skills in learning morphological and microscopical characters of natural drugs using, compound microscope, dissection microscope & projection microscope. Students are trained in different types of extraction, separation, purification and identification of individual components present in plants.

Sophisticated Chromatographic and Spectroscopic techniques are available in the department to pursue research traditional system of medicine.

Standardization of herbal drugs is also being carried out by the students in this department.

 

Pharmaceutical Analysis Laboratory

Pharmaceutical analysis provides a variety of functions, often practically to identify and quantify the chemical composition of components present in reactive intermediate, drug formulations and natural drug formulations. The department has state-of-art infrastructural facilities with sophisticated analytical instruments like UV- Visible spectrophotometer, FT-IR, Gas chromatography, HPLC and HPTLC.

 

Pharmaceutical  microbiology  and Biotechnology  Laboratory

The students will have extensive practical hands-on training in basic molecular biology techniques including maintenance of aseptic condition, preparation of media, sterilization, inoculation techniques, incubation process, isolation and cultivation of microbial culture, staining techniques, biochemical tests used to identify microbes, fermentation techniques, estimation of proteins, isolation of nucleic acids, electrophoresis, PCR, ELISA and anti-microbial activity studies etc.

 

Anatomy and physiology Laboratory

The Human anatomy and physiology laboratory has the provision for the students to learn about the structure and functions of human body. This laboratory and adjunct museum facilitates study of anatomy in the bodily systems using various models, charts, the dissection of specimens. Additionally, the lab also has the capacity for investigation of physiological functionality through experimentation using haemometer, haemocytometer, sphygmomanometer and spirometer, which can measure cardiovascular and pulmonary responses. This laboratory helps to acquire knowledge of the human body’s systems, the interdependence of these systems, and how these systems respond to exercise, diet, physical inactivity, disease, and aging.

 

Sophisticated Instrument Laboratory Facility

The Modern Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility, at our institution has been created with an objective of providing all analytical facility under one roof in order to enable for the scientific community to work in various areas of science and technology. Modern Analytical Instrumentation Facility hosts various sophisticated instruments which provide the need of cutting-edge research in many areas of modern science and technology. It also provides its users, an extensive range of analytical methods/techniques for pharmaceutical, chemical analysis, pharmacological screening and natural product characterization facility.

 

Computer Laboratory

A high-tech computer laboratory is available with more than 50 advanced computers with LAN and internet services through wireless connectivity, and LCD projection systems, hardware and software, printers, scanners etc. The internet connection of 45 Mbps 1:1 leased line internet bandwidth connectivity from class-B Internet Service Providers for education and research is available for users on all days at all time except on holidays.

 

Machine Room

* This machine room facility provides a platform for young and aspiring pharmacist, Post graduate students and research scholars to gain the hands on experience on unit operations used in the pharmaceutical industry and for the development of novel drug delivery systems in real time.

* Machine room is designed to acquire skills in learning the manufacture of various solid, liquid and semi solid formulations. Machines are also available for evaluation of various pharmaceutical dosage forms.

* The following instruments are available for manufacture of various pharmaceutical dosage forms like tablets, capsules, liquid orals, ointment and novel delivery systems like liposomes, nanoparticles, nanocrystals etc.

* Animal House approved by CPCSEA

* A separate spacious two storied building is created for housing small animals for experimental study and research. This animal house facility is approved by CPCSEA for performing animal experiments for regular practical experiments and for performing research and consultancy activities.

The every-growing library is a immeasurable sea of information for young minds. Innumerable text books, reference, journals and periodicals make for interesting reading. To add with it, there's Internet facility for online search that brings the world of information to the students. The library regularly subscribes periodicals related to pharmaceutical sciences.

Rules and Regulations

Students should strictly adhere following rules while they are in the library.

Students should enter their name with sign the entry register kept at the entrance before entering the library.

Student should conform the entry /out to the library through barcode reader by using ID card.

Students should maintain silence and decorum in the library.

Personal books or notebooks are not allowed in the library. A single sheet of paper, however, can be used for taking notes.

Bags, handbags, parcels, aprons or other receptacles are not allowed inside the library.

Four books can be borrowed at a time for a period of 5 days. Borrowed books should be returned on or before the due date.

The student will be held responsible for any damage to the borrowed books.

If an issued book is lost by the student, then the same should be replaced with the latest edition.

The "No dues certificate" will be issued only after returning all the borrowed books.

Lecture Hall

KMCH College of Pharmacy campus has spacious, well equipped lecture halls that provide the most favorable atmosphere for vibrant and focused learning. The lecture halls are furnished with contemporary audiovisual possessions. The audiovisual amenities vary according to the program of study. Lecture hall PCs are also prepared with identical software. The Lecture halls are properly ventilated and ergonomically designed to make sure that each student has adequate space, and each faculty member has the conveniences required to deliver to students/ learners a focused arena to develop their personalities.

In addition to lecture hall teaching, students can interact with faculties in discussion room located in each faculty room. These facilities therefore, make classroom teaching and learning an pleasant and productive experience for the students as well as faculty members. Display boards have been put up in the lecture halls, which serve as platforms for cheering ingenuity and mounting awareness among the students.


Audio Visual Hall

AV Hall is designed to meet the challenging expectations of modern-day students. The Hall is equipped with audiovisual equipment like Video projectors with auto recording facility, Cameras, comfortable seating, carpeting, wall paneling for acoustic effects, air-condition facility and a podium. The AV Hall is virtually connected with modern designed board meeting room.



Multipurpose Hall

The multipurpose halls are mainly utilized for conducting seminar, conferences and examinations. They are well aided with comfortable seating and latest teaching audio-visual equipment like LCD Projectors, speakers, cordless mike, pointer torch and air conditioned to facilitate smooth kinetics of knowledge. Examination halls were monitored by digital camera with recorder and provided with metal detector for detecting electronic and other metal devices.

 

Animal House

The centralized animal house of KMCH College of Pharmacy built in 170 sq/mt area in the college campus. The Animal house have different sections as per the CPCSEA guidelines viz. instruction room, quarantine section, store room, surgical room, Animal stock room, experimental room and Cleaning area. The animal house facilities are considered necessary for testing any chemical substances and pharmaceuticals prior to human trials. So very research institutions necessary to have animal house facilities to boost the research, teaching, hands on training to students which help to meet the growing demand in emergent field of Experimental Pharmacology. Our institution maintains a well established Animal House, set up and maintained as per the guidelines of CPCSEA (Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision on Experiments on Animals -Approval no: 685/PO/Re/S/2002/CPCSEA). This Central Animal House facility is a resource center for UG / PG students and faculty of various disciplines in KMCH College of pharmacy.

Drug and Poison Information Center

The Drug and Poison information Center is a division of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and is housed at Kovai Medical Center Hospital, Coimbatore. Facilities like Consultation room, Counseling room, library and information service, separate telephone lines to receive and provide drug and poison information calls. Lexicomp clinical drug information database access is available in the department for effective counseling and other clinical pharmacy activities. CD ROM databases such as DRUGDEX, MARTINDALE systems and POISON INDEX Systems are also available.

Drugs and poison information center was established to provide information about poison and treatment protocols afford inclusive, accurate and timely information to patients.

Medicinal Garden

Medicinal plants have a great role in human life and India has rich diversity of medicinal plants. About 90% of herbs are used in manufacturing of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy medicines.

In our KMCH College of Pharmacy we have established an arboretum of medicinal plants in an area of about 500 Sq.M. The objective of establishing this garden is to maintain a conservatory of the most common and important species of medicinal and aromatic plants which are being used in day-to-day primary health care.

All the plant species were authentically identified by expert taxonomists, labelled and in many cases their therapeutic values in curing different diseases are also highlighted.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Program

It is the campaign launched by The Prime minister Shri.Narendra Modi as a nationwide cleanliness campaign. It was implemented to fulfill vision and mission of clean India a day. It was launched especially on the birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi as he was dreamed and very keen to make this country clean. He had tried for Clean India in this time by motivating people through his campaign and slogan however could not be true because of the partial involvement of the people of India. It was started in 2014 on the 2nd of October on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The major Goal of Swachh Bharat is to eradicate open defecation by end of October 2nd 2019.

 

NSS (SFU)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student's personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus--community linkage.

 

Youth Red Cross

The youth red cross society of KMCH College of Pharmacy was established in the year of 2008.The members were involved in various activities like promotion of health and hygiene, service to others, Eradication of social evils such as Drug De-addiction, HIV/AIDS awareness, Promotion of Voluntary Blood Donation etc. in the past years.

 

Red Ribbon Club

Red Ribbon Club is a movement started by the Government of India in schools and colleges through which, students will spread awareness on HIV / AIDS, aimed to heightening the risk perception and preventing HIV among youth. It visualize to implant charity mind among all the students to expand their capable help towards mounting healthy life styles, donating blood to all in need by promotion of Regular voluntary blood donation. It empowers students in the age group of 17-25, by giving them information and life-skills to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and changing the most active among them into peer educators.

 

Yoga

Extensive research has found that yoga reduces stress, anxiety results in more inner piece, creativity, health success and happiness.

This one simple technique allow us to go beyond thinking and contact the deep transitional source of all our energy, creativity and intelligence, dissolving stress, enriching mind, body, emotions and relationship.

Yoga produces coherent state of restful alertness, state of true inner piece for our mind and also our body. Deep within our mind is a peaceful field of pure consciousness, our own awareness, aware to its own most settled state.

Yoga allows us to experience these effortlessly. Yoga eliminates the effect of stress internally and physiologically. When practiced regularly this give results in a more balance outlook, more energy and motivation and deeper appreciation of one's surrounding.

The experience of restful alertness during yoga creates the optimum condition to unfold our full potential for maximum intelligence and creativity.

Health and science club

Health and science club was formed by the KMCH College of Pharmacy with an objective of providing knowledge and information to the students and the society on various health needs. The club was formed with innovative ideas and plans to utilize and express the students’ knowledge into practice and thereby enhancing positive attitude to society’s health care needs.

The club was inaugurated on 28th February 2020, by Dr. A Rajasekaran. The club is managed by the committee of students from D.Pharm, B.Pharm and Pharm.D programs.

 

Women Development Cell (WDC)

A Women Development Cell (WDC) provides a platform where the students can comfortably participate and share their views with the active participation in promoting the gender equality. It symbolizes a safety hub for the students with the sign of progression and open thinking.

WDC will look after the welfare of the women faculty and students. It functions through pertaining women sexual harassment by safeguarding the rights of female students, faculty and staff members and also ensures the personality along with the academic developments of students.

WDC aims at intellectual and social upliftment of the female students by facilitating women's empowerment through guest lectures, seminars, awareness programmes and other welfare activities.
