• The
Department of Pharmaceutics is focused on making the students knowledgeable in
the formulation of pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutics involves the design,
development and evaluation of drugs in combination with an appropriate dosage
form. Pre-formulation studies, drug-excipient compatibility studies and
stability studies are carried out in the department with the focus on
developing newer dosage forms.
• The
department also has a biotechnology laboratory for carrying out microbiological
and biotechnology related activities.
• The machine
room provides an industrial set-up facility that acts as a platform for young
and aspiring pharmacist, post graduate students and research scholars to gain
the hands on experience on unit operations used in the pharmaceutical industry
and for the development of novel drug delivery systems in real-time.
• Machine room
is designed to acquire skills in learning the manufacture of various solid,
liquid and semi-solid formulations. Equipment are available for evaluation of
various pharmaceutical dosage forms.
The main focus of the research activities in
the department is on the development of Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and
Cosmeceuticals and the students are trained in several specialized areas,
including:
1.
Formulation and development of conventional solid, liquid and semisolid dosage
forms.
2.
Novel drug delivery systems like microspheres, mucoadhesives, transdermal
patches, nanoparticles, liposomes, niosomes, gastroretentive dosage formsand
colon targeted drug delivery system.
3. Study of enzyme technology, fermentation, bioassay and micro biological assays.

Pharmacognosy is the branch of science that
deals with the study of crude drugs obtained from natural sources like plants,
animals and mineral origin. It is also used to study the physical, chemical,
biochemical and biological properties of different crude drugs as well as the
phytochemicals derived from natural sources. It also includes the research for
new drugs from natural sources.
Pharmacognosy covers the following areas:
1. Medical
ethno botany – It is the study of traditional use of plants for medicinal
purposes.
2. Study
of Phytotherapy – It is about the medicinal uses of plant extracts.
3. Ethno
pharmacology – The study of pharmacological properties of traditional medicinal
substances.
4. Phytochemistry
– The study of chemicals derived from plants which includes the identification
of new compounds derived from plant sources.
5. Marine
Pharmacognosy- Study of different marine sources and the chemicals derived from
marine organisms with high medicinal value.
* The department is involved in the curriculum
which helps the students to attain an in-depth knowledge about plant taxonomy,
identification by its morphological characters and understanding the chemical
constituents and therapeutic uses of traditional crude drugs as well as crude
drugs belonging to different group of chemical constituents like Alkaloids,
Glycosides, Flavonoids, Saponins, Terpenoids, Resins etc.
* As practical knowledge is very important in
Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, pharmacognostical evaluation of crude drugs
includes Physical and chemical evaluation of crude drugs are necessary to
identify the authentic drugs and their adulterants.
* The department is also effectively involved
in researches in laboratory techniques like extraction of crude drugs and
volatile oil, isolation of Phyto compounds, Phytochemical screening of herbal
drugs and chromatographic analysis of Herbal Extracts.
The Laboratory is well equipped with
Trinocular, Compound and electron microscopes for studying the Microscopical
characters and Simple microscopes to study the morphological characters of
crude drugs. Extraction units like Soxhlet apparatus for the preparation of
herbal extracts, Clavenger apparatus for hydro distillation of Volatile oil,
TLC plates, TLC spreader and TLC chamber, Camera Lucida mirror type, stage
micrometers, eyepiece micrometers for Quantitative microscopy, Hot air oven,
Muffle furnace for determination of Ash values. Heating mandles, water bath,
Electronic balance, Dispensing balance, mechanical stirrers etc.
A well established Medicinal Herbal Garden
with number of Medicinal plants each with naming board containing its botanical
name, family, chemical constituents and uses is an added advantage for our
students to acquire knowledge about the growth and maintenance of the medicinal
Plants and its preservation.
Department of Pharmacology provides advanced
training in various aspects of pharmacology, molecular biology, pre-clinical
& clinical drug development and Pharmacotherapeutics.
Pharmacology department consist of a diverse
group of faculties who are highly qualified and experienced, who works for very
advanced innovative research, health care practice for students.
The department promots lateral and critical
thinking. The scope of the department is to provide cellular and molecular
pathways in living systems as the first priority of the disease and cure. The
department has centralized and approved CPCSEA animal house for conducting experiments
on Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits and Zebra fish. The Department
develops scientific research for the students of B.Pharm, and M.Pharm. This
perspective makes leaders in academia, industry, clinical and regulatory
affairs.
The
Department of Pharmacology is an energetic department and is involved in
experting projects related to Myesthenia gravis, arthritis, cancer, diabetes
mellitus, herbal screening, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, cardiovascular,
psychopharmacology, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer, Parkinson’s
diseases, respiratory disorders, translational research drug delivery systems,
drug interaction studies, toxicological evaluation and In-vitro/In-vivo
bioassay development.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an amalgamation
of Chemistry, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences necessary for
providing a comprehensive outlook in drug design, and discovery of novel lead
molecules and pharmaceutical aids. It also includes the structure-activity
relationships of drugs and pharmaceutical substances.
In the post-GATT era, there is a need
for vast and speedy research to obtain new drug molecules for clinical use.
Various factors including lifestyle changes and indiscriminate use of medicines
have led to the development of resistance to many existing therapeutic agents.
This situation has created a dire need for professionals trained in
rational drug design to discover novel drugs. Our program gives students the
prerequisite knowledge and skills towards this direction. We train future
pharmacists who are empowered to meet the challenges associated with the
dynamic drug discovery process
Pharmaceutical chemistry department is a
dynamic academic wing of pharmacy education that imparts knowledge to students
about the chemistry of pharmaceutical substances and their applications in the
field of pharmacy. The study of pharmaceutical chemistry encompasses the
fundamental life-related pharmaceutical substances and their chemical
interactions with life, using organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical
chemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry and biochemistry as a
base, upon which is built a wide range of research fields.
The pharmaceutical chemistry department
efficiently moulds the students to integrate all aspects of chemistry into
diverse pharmaceutical & medical sciences research. Each laboratory of the
pharmaceutical chemistry department is involved in the research related to drug
discovery and development.
The department actively involves in fetching
various research projects grants from funding agencies and received many
research grants. The department has excellent records of research publications
in reputed journals with good impact factor, also delivers the original
research works carried out, conducts and participates in many national and
international research forums.
